The play was performed on January 8, 1851 at the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg in the presence of Tsar Nikolai I , who is said to have left the hall during the play because of the disrespectful portrayal of officials.

action

The landowner Agrafena Pankratjewna Tschupurlina is looking for a husband for her foster daughter Lisaveta Platonovna. Six suitors arrive and vie for their favor. Only the young German Liebenthal stands out from the strange owls, because he is interested in the landowner's pug.

He is sent to Lisaveta to make her a declaration of love. Meanwhile, unrest is growing in the house because Tschupurlina's pug has disappeared. The landowner is no longer interested in the fact that Liebenthal and Lisaweta have declared their love for each other, rather she promises Lisaweta's hand to the person who brings the pug back to her. Liebenthal rushes off immediately.

Since it seems hopeless to find the pug, the other suitors decide on an emergency solution. You just want to present other cute dogs to Tschupurlina. And really, she seems to be carried away, one of the suitors even brought her another pug. But just as she wants to declare him the groom, Liebenthal shows up with the real pug. Liebenthal and Lisaweta receive the blessing of Tschupurlina.

The other suitors leave angrily. One of them stays behind on stage at the end and complains about the quality of the play: "Такой, право, нехороший сюжет! .." ("Really, such a bad plot!")
