Fantje is a picture book published simultaneously in Poland and Germany in 2010 , written by the Polish-German publisher and author Adam Jaromir and illustrated by the Polish illustrator Gabriela Cichowska .

General

“Fantje” is the first collaboration between Cichowska and Jaromir and at the same time the first book ever that Cichowska has published internationally.

Fantje tells the story of a little white elephant on its journey from Africa to Meißen in a china shop. On the way, Fantje travels across oceans, through different countries and meets different people.

Reviews

The book received international awards, including an honorable mention at the Bologna Ragazzi Award 2011. The jury's statement said that Fantje was “supported by a masterful graphic that draws from the wealth of cultures” and was “a homage that is both cheerful and serious of the mystery of childlike perception in those years when everything is tiny or larger than life ”. In addition, Fantje received a White Raven from the International Youth Library Munich 2010, an honorable mention from the Polish Publishers Association PTWK as one of the most beautiful books of 2011 and a nomination for Book of the Year 2011 from IBBY Poland. For the magazine “Eselsohr” Fantje combines “pop-up-like shapes, Eastern European narrative and drawing art and that magical spinning that is missing in many picture books today”.
