history

At the beginning of the 1930s, entrepreneurs Fred Beck and Roger Dahlhjelm decided to set up a permanent market for farmers; As early as July 1934, farmers began to sell their products from trucks at what is now the Farmers Market. Fixed stands and the first restaurants opened in October 1934. Success was virtually instantaneous, with the Farmers Market becoming a major mall for the Los Angelenos. Parking spaces were soon created, and in 1948 the clock tower was built, which has since become a symbol for the market. In 1952, CBS Television City moved into a building in the immediate vicinity, so that many people from the TV business used the Farmers Market to shop and eat. In the 1990s the facility was renovated and expanded to reflect its status as a tourist attraction.
