Foodie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term foodie (translation options : gastro fan, food lover, etc.) describes a person for whom the consumption of food and drinks that are rated as “good”, “authentic” or “high quality” is very important. This consumption is elevated to the status of a hobby. In contrast to the use of the word gourmet , however, a foodie does not require any precise knowledge of taste, food culture, forms of preparation or the like.

In the criticism, the term is seen as an expression of a globalized trend pushed by the consumer industry.

History of the term

In 1982 Harper's & Queen magazine in London read: “Foodies are foodists. They dislike and despise all non-foodies. ”The Merriam-Webster defines the foodie as:“ a person having an avid interest in the latest food fads ”.

In 1984 a book called The Official Foodie Handbook was published. Currently, the term has also established itself in the German-speaking area, where it is sometimes used on photos of dishes. There are also numerous foodie blogs and foodie tours (in addition to the older gastro tours); In 2016, a new magazine called Foodie was launched in the German-speaking area . According to a study by the University of Göttingen , around 10% of Germans would describe themselves as foodies.
