The barrel iron is a rare common figure in heraldry . The heraldic figure is shown as a horseshoe-shaped bent with six long barbed ends. The iron can be in the shield and also in the coat of arms and is usually shown in black.

The barrel iron is similar to the heraldic figure of the cow iron . It is also considered a boiler hook .
