Fist (unit)

A fist or fist's breadth denotes a measure of length that is based on the width of the clenched fist . It is roughly the width of a hand (the fist is slightly wider than the palm of the open hand). The manageable length corresponds to about 10 cm.

Horse measure

The fist was an old Austrian measure of length and was used to measure the size of a horse . In the Hungarian Pest , the kuk measure is also called Moroccan and is divided equally. The measure is also called horse measure after its use .

The English hands (or "hands high") corresponds to the measure .

The fist as an angle measure

The clenched fist is also a useful measure for estimating angles . With the arm outstretched, the finger bones mark about 3, 5 and 8 °.

Further use

The “fist length” is known from some Islamic schools as the shortest length to which the beard can be trimmed.
