Bellows cyst

Bellows cyst on the right wing of a budgie, surgical site

A bellows cyst is a developmental disorder in the formation of a feather . The spring shaft is malformed and cannot break through the outer skin. As the spring continues to grow in the bellows, it rolls up or breaks, as a result of which cheesy material collects in the cystically enlarged bellows. The malformation of the feathers occurs mainly in colored and shaped canaries and budgies , preferably on the wing. Presumably it is genetic.

Treatment involves opening and clearing the cyst. The risk of recurrence in the same place or bellows cysts elsewhere is relatively high.
