As badminton a recreational game is called, which is usually played by two players. There are some similarities to the competitive sport of badminton .

There are several ways to play badminton. Most of the time, it's about playing the ball back and forth as often as possible without it falling on the ground. Other variants consist in a match-like game over a string or in driving the opponent. There is no fixed set of rules. A network is not absolutely necessary; As a rule, it is not played on a field delimited by lines. Despite the susceptibility to wind, the game is often played outdoors.

The ball and rackets are the same as in badminton, but because of their recreational nature, cheaper and less high-quality material is often used.

The term “badminton” is often equated with the competitive sport of badminton. This use has grown historically, especially in the new federal states of Germany, since "badminton" was used there for the competitive game in GDR times. Badminton was also introduced in Austria in the mid-1950s under the name "Badminton", and the association was also founded as the "Badminton Association".
