Feierabend.de is a German social network for the target group of the best agers . The platform was founded in September 1998 as the first German-speaking Internet club for the 50+ generation. The site pioneered a new genre of senior-level network. Today it is operated by the Feierabend Onlinedienste für Seniors GmbH, founded in 1999 in Frankfurt. With around 182,000 members averaging 60 years of age, Feierabend.de is the largest German-language offering of its kind. According to the IVW , the website has around 700,000 visitors a month. The offer was awarded the special prize as “Best Community” in Germany in September 2008 in the “Paths to the Net” competition organized by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

Use

The focus for visitors is on exchanging experiences and getting to know like-minded people. Each user creates a personal profile and can thus contact other members. A special feature of Feierabend.de are the more than 125 regional groups in which the members meet in various cities in Germany as well as in Spain, Brazil, Austria, Hungary and Switzerland to spend their free time together “on site”. These regional groups are headed by volunteer regional ambassadors and each have their own website and calendar of events. With the regionalization, Feierabend was the first senior citizen internet meeting place to combine virtual and real life.

Edited areas offer information and reports on topics such as travel, health, culture, relationships and love, computers and technology. About 50 percent of the contributions are made by the members themselves. From the start, the focus was on interactive offers, which have been expanded ever since. These include chats, forums, business cards, blogs (“diaries”), photo galleries and a virtual poetry album.

Business model

The free offer is financed by advertisements and does not receive any government subsidies. Just two years after it was founded, Feierabend AG was one of the first dot-com companies in Germany to be profitable.

In January 2013, Feierabend AG took over the competitor Platinnetz. Platinnetz was converted into a fee-based partner exchange for senior citizens in autumn 2018.
