A precision indicator (or precision probe ) is a mechanical measuring device for measuring lengths . They are the most precise mechanical length measuring devices with a scale division of mostly 1 µm.

The main difference in the mechanical structure to the dial gauge is that they do not have a rack , but a lever system. This transfers the plunger movement to the pointer via gear segments and pinions . In contrast to a dial gauge, this means that a full pointer rotation is not possible, but on the one hand a higher resolution and on the other hand a small reversal span of 0.5 µm.

The measuring range is usually 50 µm or 100 µm. Due to the small measuring range, they are like the dial gauge and the test indicator rarely absolute measurement , but usually only difference measurement . Adjustable auxiliary pointers are often built in (as shown in the picture) in order to mark the permitted tolerance range and thus to be able to see at a glance whether the tested part is within the tolerance.
