Schermbeck light railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schermbeck - Gahlen field railway connected the Idunahall brickworks (later Röben / Idunahall) with the clay pits of the Gahlen mining field until 2002.

history

From 1908 to 1936, lorry trains drove the clay from the pits to the Lippe, from where the clay was transferred to a cable car and transported to the factory. From 1936 the trains went straight to the plant.

While it was still in operation, friends of the light railroad were committed to maintaining this line. It was one of the oldest surviving field railways in Germany and had a varied route.

Current condition

It was planned to set up a museum railway operation on the route. For various reasons this was not possible. Most of the old route has now been dismantled, so that there can no longer be any traffic.

Some of the rolling stock is maintained by the Schermbeck-Gahlen Feldbahnfreunde. An approximately 1.3 km long field railway line was built on the club's premises near the former line. Visitor trips are possible.

The light railway was part of Route 7: Industrial Culture on the Lippe of the Route of Industrial Culture until mid-2011 .
