The Serrig light railway is a light railway operated as a museum railway with a gauge of 600 mm in Serrig . The 1.2 km long visitor field railway was built from the historical material of the "Weinbergsbahn" of the old Serrig wine-growing domain.

history

In 1904, a field railway with almost 12 km of track was laid on the formerly state-owned Serrig wine-growing domain in one of the largest contiguous wine-growing regions in Germany. It was in operation until the 1990s and was used universally for the transport of employees and material, the use of pesticides and visitor trains up to the actual grape harvest. The route of the field railway tracks was only about 2 meters wide, while the field paths for carts or conventional tractors are at least twice as wide.

After the agricultural light railroad operations had ceased around 1990, members of the former Feldbahnfreunde Serrig association saved a large part of the material from decay and scrapping. From 2000 they built a new line as a visitor field railway, which was put into operation in September 2001. There today, among other things, a restored original locomotive from the vineyard, the DIEMA DS12, drives along the old vineyards with a view of the huge vineyard area.

Rail vehicles

The historic rail vehicles were restored in accordance with monument conservation criteria. This includes four grape lorries for the former bringing in the grape harvest, two tipping lorries for transporting fertilizer and manure, and two tankers for pest control. The so-called Härewagen were originally reserved for the Prussian supervisory authority for the annual inspection trip .
