Field telephone 50

The field telephone 50 (Ftf 50) of the Swiss Army takes its name from the year 1950, when it was procured for the first time. The field telephone was developed by Albiswerk Zürich AG (today Siemens ) from 1948 to 1950 and produced from 1951 to 1960.

Components

The 2.6 kg field telephone 50 has dimensions of 150 × 100 × 225 mm. It is wrapped in a cuboid protective jacket made of green canvas, to which a shoulder strap made of the same material is attached. Inside is the actual phone, which is powered by a 1.5 volt battery. The so-called microtel , a common earpiece with an earpiece and microphone, serves as the speech device . The canvas surrounding the phone leaves a circular opening on the front for the crank, which, when operated, triggers the call signal at the opposite station. The ringing signal is generated by a crank inductor . Two wire clips at the top of the device are used to secure the wire ends of telephone lines .

use

Switchboard 85

The field telephone 50 has been used by all troops in the Swiss Army since 1952 for both point-to-point connections and as a telephone with a landline number.

For the first variant, two field telephones are connected with telephone wire.

Field connection box fac

In the second variant, the telephone is connected to lines specially reserved for the army or a field connection box (FAK). A connection to her is now possible via any telephone. When connected to the telephone switchboard 85 ( field switchboard until 1993, 1957 ), all telephone numbers can be called from the field telephone.

If only a normal telephone connection is available, the telephone can also be coupled with the rotary dial of the army telephone 53 (Atf 53). In addition to the separate dial attachment, the Atf 53 is technically identical to the Ftf 50. However, due to its sheet metal housing, it is not suitable for all weather conditions like the Ftf 50 and is more suitable for bunker cabling.

Reasons for using

The advantages of the field telephone 50 are its compact and lightweight construction, its ability to withstand heavy loads from bumps, blows or the weather and the impossibility of listening to it without contacting the line. The last point also makes it an important addition to other military communication tools such as B. the radio .
