Feline cryptosporidiosis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Feline Cryptosporidiosis is a parasitic intestinal disease in cats. It is caused by the single cells Cryptosporidium felis or Cryptosporidium parvum . Often there is an underlying disease that damages the immune system, such as feline leukemia , but there are also severe forms that do not impair the immune system. The disease occurs worldwide, in the USA serological tests have shown an infection rate of about 15%.

Recurring diarrhea with loss of fluid is typical .

Treatment, similar to that of cryptosporidiosis in humans, is difficult. Paromomycin has been shown to be effective, but has significant side effects in cats and can cause kidney failure .
