Rock art concentrations in Sweden

The rock carvings at Boglösa in the Uppland province in central Sweden are located southeast of Enköping . The three neighboring petroglyphs ( Swedish Hällristningar ) belong to a rock carving area . They come from the Swedish Bronze (approx. 1500–500 BC) and Iron Ages .

  • Boglösa Kyrka, near the church
  • Brandskogen, lies 900 m west of the Boglösa Kyrka
  • Rickeby, near the church

Boglösa Kyrka and Rickebyhallen

The two bronze age rock art complexes show abstractly depicted people, animals and symbols. Including footprints, circles, wheels, rings, ships, spirals and indefinable images as well as interactions between the groups shown. Thus they largely correspond to the spectrum of Bronze Age rock carvings in the southern half of Sweden.

Brandskogen

Among the Hällristningar who show pictures of ships, the 4.13 m long and 0.6 m high “Brandskogsskeppet” is out of the ordinary in many ways. The unprecedented, as it is naturalistically represented, compact-looking hull is decorated with the heads of elk cows on the fore and stern posts . The crew consists of six rowers. This representation is dated to the beginning of the Iron Age.

The Brandskogsskeppet is apparently a small vehicle that represents a votive offering to the gods. The giver is possibly the figure who stands under the ship and appears to be carrying it. The Archaeological Institute of Uppsala University understands that the representation in: “Relate to the cult act or must be regarded as sacred”. Thus, the representation corresponds to real ship victims such as the Nydam ship . A second rock carving on the Plate of Brandskogen shows that the ships of the Bronze Age were possibly of considerable size. The stylized, and therefore older, representation of the ship shows 79 crew lines.
