Femoral pore

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Femoral pores are skin glands that are located on the inside of the thighs in some lizards . They are enlarged in the mating season, especially in the males. The secretions released by the femoral pores vary widely chemically between sexes and individuals, and absorb ultraviolet radiation in at least some species such as the desert iguana . It is therefore believed that they play a role in identifying sex and possibly different individuals within a species .
