Fergus McAteer is a tax advisor and was a Nationalist Party and Irish Independence Party (IIP) politician in Northern Ireland .

McAteer became politically active in the Northern Irish civil rights movement of the late 1960s. On Bloody Sunday 1972 he was arrested for allegedly throwing stones. These charges were later dropped, but he always vigorously opposed the charge. He is the son of Eddie McAteer (1914–1986), who was the leader of the Nationalist Party in the 1960s .

McAteer was elected to Londonderry City Council for the Nationalist Party in 1973 and 1977 . In October 1977 the Nationalist Party merged with Unity to form the Irish Independence Party ; McAteer was a founding member of the IIP together with Frank McManus (Unity); after 1979 he was party leader of the IIP. As a Northern Irish nationalist, McAteer campaigned for the unification of Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland , but also supported steps towards Northern Ireland's independence.

In the British general election in 1979 McAteer ran for the IPP in the constituency of Londonderry and reached fifth place. In 1981 McAteer was re-elected to the Londonderry City Council for the IIP and received more votes than before. He was able to keep the mandate in 1985 when the IIP lost 17 of its 21 municipal mandates. The IPP dissolved before the 1989 election and Fergus McAteer was no longer a candidate.

McAteer founded a tax consultancy firm in 1973 in which he works with 13 employees and his brother Nail.
