The Ferkelruß , Borken rash or Humid epidermis inflammation of the piglets ( exudative epidermitis ) is a skin disease in pigs caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus hyicus is caused.

S. hyicus normally colonizes the skin of healthy pigs. Deficiencies and injuries weaken the skin's natural defenses, the pathogens penetrate the epidermis and lead to inflammation. This particularly affects small suckling pigs; the severity of the disease decreases with age.

Clinical picture

Initially, only vesicles develop. This later results in greasy black-brown deposits, sometimes distributed over the whole body (acute form). If it is mild, only smallpox-like rashes appear. There is itching depending on the severity of the disease. Sometimes joints and internal organs are also affected. Older pigs are also very rarely affected.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is based on the very typical clinical picture or a bacteriological examination .

therapy

Treatment with penicillin or another antibiotic based on an antibiogram . Maternity vaccinations with herd-specific vaccines also achieve good effects.
