Staphylococcus hyicus is a type of bacteria from the genus Staphylococcus that naturallycolonizesthe skin of pigs andcan causethe skin disease piglet soot if the skin has a weak immune system.
S. hyicus is gram positive and facultatively anaerobic . In the past, S. hyicus was still listed as Biovar 2 from Staphylococcus epidermidis , but is now a species of its own.
The coagulase behavior is inconsistent between the different strains, as is their virulence. The most important virulence factor are the exfoliative toxins (ExhA-D).
Hemolysis does not occur.
