Fernando del Pulgar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fernando del Pulgar (* probably before 1430 in the Toledo region ; † probably after 1492; also: Hernando del Pulgar) was secretary at Iberian royal courts, ambassador and chronicler .

Life

It is not known for sure when and where Fernando del Pulgar was born. Presumably he was born before 1430 in the Toledo region as the son of Diego Rodríguez de Toledo Pulgar. The years 1425 and 1436 are also mentioned as possible years of birth. Fernando del Pulgar was probably a ' converso ' or at least descended from converts .

He grew up at the court of King John II and later became secretary to Henry IV of Castile . For this he also carried out diplomatic assignments.

After the death of Henry IV he worked (probably from 1474) as a secretary, ambassador and finally also as a chronicler for Queen Isabella I , even if he did not stay at court in the years 1478–1482. The reason for the withdrawal from public life is probably that he had drawn the displeasure of some people by criticizing the Inquisition .

Apparently he began his great and important Chronicle Crónica de los Reyes Católicos at a time when he was still staying away from the royal court. In any case, this is suggested by letters that report the great deeds of the respective senders. A letter from Fernando del Pulgar to the Queen from 1482 can also be cited here, since in this he already writes about his Crónica but also about his soon return to the court.

Nothing is known about his death, but from his works ( Crónica de los Reyes Católicos; Tratado de los Reyes de Granada ) we can conclude that he died after 1492, as these texts still know of events from that year.
