District heating tunnel Kiel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kiel district heating tunnel is a 1368 meter long tunnel for district heating and runs below the Kiel Fjord . The tunnel was built from 1988 to 1990 by the joint power station Kiel , which is located on the east bank of the fjord, to the parts of Kiel on the west bank . The maximum diameter is five meters, at the deepest point it is 38 meters below the water level. In the accessible tunnel, two district heating lines run from the joint power station in Kiel with a diameter of 700 mm, which supply 60 percent of the public utility customers, and a high-voltage line with 110 kV . The water leaves the east bank at 130 degrees Celsius, when it returns it has cooled to 70 degrees Celsius. In 2009 the tunnel had to be renovated for 16 million euros, although it was supposed to last 100 years.
