history

Part of the open-air stage, even Amphitheater called

Due to its picturesque location, artists, journalists, writers and musicians settled in Sozopol since the 1960s, and they were able to work relatively freely in the People's Republic of Bulgaria far from the communist control of the capital. This earned the city the nickname City of Painters and Fishermen very early on . In 1984 the first artists appeared in front of local audiences and tourists without the approval of the state apparatus, which was otherwise customary at the time. The first performances and concerts took place on the open-air stage (called amphitheater) built in the same year.

Today the Festival of Arts is one of the most famous cultural festivals in Bulgaria. In addition to the open-air stage (next to the Archaeological Museum ), the museums, the galleries, the culture house, public spaces, the stadium, the school and the beach are used as event spaces.
