The fortress of Gyangzê , known in China as the ruins of the defense against the British aggressors on Zongshan Mountain , or the ruins of the fortress to resist the British aggressors on Zongshan Mountain ( 江孜 宗 山 抗英 遗址 , Jiāngzī Zōngshān kàng yīng yízhǐ ), in Gyangzê County is an old fort on Fortress Mountain (Chinese: Zongshan宗 山) in the Gyangzê Municipality, Xigazê administrative district of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China .

The mountain fortress dates back to the 9th century. In the 14th century, the Pelkhor monastery (also: Pelkor , Palcho etc .; Tibetan: dpal 'khor ) was built not far from the fortress .

Gyangzê Fortress (1994)

The monastery fortress became known in 1904 as a defensive structure against the British attack in the British Tibet campaign under Colonel Sir Francis Younghusband , whose siege it could not withstand. It has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (1-5) since 1961 .
