The Fire Brigade Decoration (1938) was a German decoration for all members of recognized fire brigades, which was created on January 30, 1938 by Adolf Hitler Ordinance.

Background to the creation of this badge of honor

As early as 1936, the then Reich Minister of the Interior, Wilhelm Frick , had donated a fire service honor mark (RGBl. December 22, 1936, page 1146), which was soon to be replaced by a new decree by Hitler. The division of the badge of honor into two levels was retained. The only difference was that what was previously the first stage as a cross-connector has now been transformed into a ribbon medal, which was unusual.

Levels of Honor

  • 2nd stage with a silver-framed cross of flames on a white background with silver inscription
  • 1st stage with a gold-framed cross of flames on a white background with the same gold inscription

Ordinance on the award of the Fire Brigade Decoration

The full wording of the ordinance on the award of the Fire Brigade Decoration, printed in the Reichsgesetzblatt No. 8 of January 30, 1938, page 77 reads:

On the basis of § 3 of the law on titles, medals and decorations of July 1, 1937 (RGBl Part I, S 725) I decree: The ordinance on the fire service honorary mark of December 22, 1936 (RGBl. Part I, page 1146) contains the following Version:

  • § 1: In recognition of services to the German fire extinguishing system, I award the Fire Brigade Badge of Honor.
  • § 2: (1) The fire brigade decoration is awarded in two stages, also to foreigners. The 1st level is awarded to members of recognized professional fire brigades (fire protection police) or volunteer fire brigades as well as other persons who have made special contributions to fire extinguishing. In addition, the 1st level is awarded for particularly courageous and determined behavior in fighting fires. (2) The 2nd level is awarded to members of recognized professional fire brigades (fire protection police) or volunteer fire brigades who have completed their 25th year of service as a fire brigade member in honor and loyalty after May 1, 1936. (3) There is no legal entitlement to the award.
  • § 3: The fire brigade's badge of honor shows a cross of flames on a white background, with the swastika in the middle and the legend on a ribbon for merit in fire extinguishing . The band is silver at the 2nd level and gold at the 1st level. (2) The fire department badge of honor (both levels) is worn on a red and white ribbon on the left side of the chest. (3) If the fire brigade badge of honor is worn on the medal buckle, it must be attached to the place prescribed for state service awards. (4) When the 1st level fire service badge is awarded, the 2nd level is discarded, but remains as a souvenir to the recipient.
  • § 4: (1) The entrusted person receives a certificate signed by me about the award of the Fire Brigade Decoration of Honor 1st Level. (2) The recipient of the Fire Brigade Decoration of Honor 2nd Level will be issued with a certificate issued by the Minister of State and the head of my Presidential Chancellery, stating the award of the Decoration of Honor.
  • § 5: The fire brigade badge becomes the property of the borrower; at his death it remains as a souvenir to the heirs.
  • § 6: I will issue the implementing regulations
  • Berlin, January 30, 1938, The Führer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, The Reich Minister of the Interior Frick

Implementing regulation

The implementation ordinance, also issued on January 30, 1938, then regulates the further procedure. The proposals for the award of the Fire Brigade Decoration by the Reichsführer SS and the Chief of the German Police had to be submitted in duplicate to the Reich Minister of the Interior Wilhelm Frick . The copy was made monthly by administrative district and in alphabetical order as well as by level. The Reich Minister of the Interior then passed these proposals on to the Presidential Chancellery of the Order Chancellery, which then obtained Hitler's approval. Decisive for the award of the 2nd stage was the time of the actual entry of the person to be loaned into a recognized professional fire brigade (fire protection police) or a volunteer fire brigade. The time he left the fire brigade due to military training in the Wehrmacht was harmless. On the other hand, periods of service in the war, military or labor service ( RAD ) were not taken into account if the entrusted had only joined the professional fire brigade (fire protection police) or a volunteer fire brigade after completing these times.

Others

According to the law on titles, medals and decorations of July 26, 1957, wearing the award in the Federal Republic of Germany is only permitted without National Socialist emblems.
