Fin Fin is a life simulation with artificial intelligence (AI = Artificial Intelligence) from the company Fujitsu , which was launched in September 1997 for Windows . The complete game title was: Fin Fin, your friend from the magic planet Teo . Fin Fin was the first computer being with a developed virtual personality (not to be compared with the Tamagotchi ).

Gameplay

The game has no fixed goal, but aims to teach the player patience and responsibility by long-term attempts to win Fin Fins friendship and affection. There are several options for the player to communicate with the main character. The simplest way of communicating is via the keyboard, by pressing the number keys from 1 to 5. This will play short melodies that will grab fin fins' attention. To increase the fun factor, you can also use a microphone and a whistle that comes with the game to get in touch with fin fin. In the 3, 4 and 5 world versions, it is also possible to use the enclosed “FinFin Sound Recorder” program and a microphone to record short sound recordings on the remaining number keys from 6 to 0. These can be played in the game by pressing the buttons. There was also a separate sensor unit that told Fin Fin whether the player was sitting in front of the screen. However, the sensor had not worked in Germany due to a faulty installation routine.

Pawns

Main character

Fin Fin is the main character of the game and is half dolphin , half bird. The player can observe him at various selectable locations on his home planet Teo or communicate with him. Depending on the current location, Fin Fin reacts differently to attempts at interaction. You can watch him swim, fly or play, or listen to him sing or "talk".

Minor characters

Fin Fin has a family that consists of his wife and a regular child. You can only visit and observe this family together if you have a version with all six locations or if the version includes the location called "Nest". In the lower versions, in rare cases, one can only observe Fin Fin's wife in two specific locations.

Flora and fauna

In addition to the main character, other animals and plants from the planet can also be admired. There are friendly animals that interact with the main character, but also hostile animals that make life difficult for the main character. Since there are day and night as well as seasons in the game, you can watch certain plants bloom and fade.

Weather and Phenomena

The game includes natural weather, from a sunny day to cloudy, rain or even thunderstorms. Snowfall does not occur in the game, however, as the locations are near the equator and the temperatures are more constant in the warm to mild range. In addition to the weather, there are also annual spectacles such as falling stars, lunar eclipses or natural weather phenomena such as rainbows or northern lights to marvel at.

places

There are a total of six locations in the game that you can visit. In Germany, a version appeared first in which one could select three of the six locations. A version with four selectable locations followed later. The five-location version was only available in the United States, and the six-location version was only available in Japanese and Chinese. For a long time, however, it has been possible to download a beta version, almost completely translated into German by a fan, from all six locations on the FinFin Archive page.

Amile forest

Description and appearance of the place:
This is the most famous and important place in the game. It is located quite high and you have a wide view over the forests below to the "Ermes" mountain. In the picture there is a curled branch in the foreground. In the middle distance, on the left of the picture, you can see a self-winding "Yaika" tree with leaves hanging down (similar to a willow or a birch ). A little further back, on the right in the picture, there are two palm-like trees.

Regarding the observation and skills of the player at this location:
The Amile Forest is FinFin's favorite place where he stays most. Here he plays, eats and sleeps. Here you can watch him fly and perform his tricks, or listen to him sing. Here the player can offer a "Lemo" berry to FinFin by pressing the space bar, which he accepts or rejects depending on his state of health.

Lemo Forest

Description and appearance of the place:
This is where the colorful “Lemo” berries grow, which FinFin eats every now and then. The place looks like a valley surrounded by mountains with fir trees growing on them . In the middle of the valley grow the "Lemo" bushes, which always produce new flowers and berries. In the foreground is a plant-rich hill with music-making flowers and two leafless trees.

Regarding observation and skills of the player at this location:
FinFin visits the valley to satisfy his hunger for berries. Here you can watch him circling the bushes several times and looking for ripe berries. If he has found one, he plucks it from the bush while hovering in order to devour it afterwards. At this location, the player can also hit the beat with a drum (called a neuro-drum) by pressing the space bar. When FinFin is not present, some plants begin to make music. After a while, animals appear and take part in the concert . As soon as FinFin appears, the plants stop playing and the animals disappear one by one.

Tsubu forests

Description and appearance of the place:
You are in a small forest clearing, surrounded by tall trees. The trees look similar to conifers , which carry nuts that are shiny golden brown, which you can see twinkling in the tops on some nights . The shrubs, bushes and ferns in the clearing resemble jungle plants. On the floor of the clearing lies a hollow tree trunk and a large amount of nuts or their shells.

Regarding the observation and skills of the player at this location:
FinFin visits the forest to satisfy his hunger for “Tsubu” nuts. Here you can watch him shake the nuts from the trees by flying through the treetops. Then he eats the nuts lying on the ground.

Secret bay

Description and appearance of the place:
The secret bay is a small side course of the Remse river, which runs in the thicket of the jungle and ends there. In the picture you can see two opposite, wider pieces of bank, which are surrounded by dense bank plants. There are leafless trees between the plants, the branches of which point in a different direction after each visit. At the back of the bank is a tree with a hole in the trunk that forms a small cave.

Regarding observation and skills of the player in this place:
FinFin comes to this bay to relax. Therefore, the player is advised here not to disturb him. However, the player can watch FinFin swimming, playing and catching fish. If the player is lucky, FinFin's wife can appear at this location for a brief moment.

Remse Ufer (west bank)

Description and appearance of the place:
You are right in the Remse river. The upper part of the picture is above the water level , the lower part of the picture is under water. In the foreground there is a rock in the water that has a hole through it. In the background of the upper part of the picture you can see the plant-rich bank opposite.

Regarding observation and abilities of the player at this place:
This place is the only one showing the underwater world of TEO, and only here the player can watch FinFin diving and hunting fish. FinFin's wife rarely comes to this place. If both are present, the player can watch them do a short underwater dance.

nest

Description and appearance of the place:
In the left foreground area of the picture there is a bush made up of many different plants. In the middle is the nest of FinFin and Finnina, which is either in the construction, final or decaying stage. On the right in the background is a narrow waterfall that ends in a small river. The square is surrounded by a forest of tall trees.

Reference to observation and skills of the player at this location:
At this location, the player can watch a young animal from FinFin and his wife Finnina being raised. By pressing the space bar, you hear a loud FinFin call, which can cause various things. This “call” is primarily intended to scare away an enemy named Gminfly (flying orca ) if it has come too close to the nest. If you exercise the "call", a certain plant in the foreground is always frightened, which suddenly puffs up and changes color. Over time, this calms down again and assumes its old form. If the player presses the button while the FinFin cub is in the foreground, it will start crying.
