The Finnish Mathematical Society (Suomen Matemaattinnen Yhdistys Ry, SMY) was founded in 1868, making it one of the oldest mathematical societies. From the beginning, one of the goals of the society was to encourage young people to study mathematics, for which purpose it now publishes a magazine, Silmu. In addition to the annual SMY congresses, it organizes, in alternation with the three other Scandinavian countries, Scandinavian mathematics conferences and a Matemaatik Kopäivät conference, at which the latest mathematical research in Finland is presented every two years.

Together with the Finnish Physical Society (SFS), the SMY publishes the five-yearly magazine Arkhimedes (in Finnish with an English summary), which is free to members. Your newsletter is called Eukleides . Together with the other Scandinavian mathematical societies, it publishes Mathematica Scandinavica and Nordisk Matematisk Tidskrift.

The seat is the University of Helsinki . The SMY has around 350 members. In 1978 she organized the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Helsinki (under the direction of Olli Lehto , Rolf Nevanlinna , Olli Lokki, Ilppo Simo Louhivaara). The logo is the modular figure.
