Finsteres Loch (Thuringian Forest)
The Finstere Loch is a densely wooded rock canyon with a small waterfall in the uppermost part of the Schortetal in the Thuringian Forest . It is about 1.5 km southeast of Stützerbach in the Ilm district , the Goethe hiking trail Ilmenau – Stützerbach leads past it.
The Finstere Loch became famous in 1783, because a large nocturnal hunting camp took place there at the foot of a rock, which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe poetically processed in his poem Ilmenau . He presented this poem to Duke Carl August (1757–1828) of Saxe-Weimar on September 3, 1783 on the occasion of his 26th birthday. The handwriting of the poem can be seen in the Goethemuseum in Stützerbach.
