history

The first inhabitants in the area were Indians who lived on the banks of the Methow River (which is named after the Methow ), the Twisp River and the Chewuch River . The city bears the name of Theodore Winthrop , an adventurer, traveler and writer.

After a devastating fire in 1893, the city was rebuilt. Waring's original Duck Brand Saloon survived the fire unscathed and is now Winthrop's Townhall.

In 1894 a flood destroyed the bridge on the north arm of the river, which was rebuilt by Colonel Tom Hart in 1895. At that time, the place lived mainly from a well-equipped sawmill, its pastures, cattle breeding and the supply of goods to the mines in the area . By 1915 most of the tunnels were closed.

Winthrop was registered as a town on March 12, 1924 .

When the North Cascades Highway was nearing completion in 1972 , some business people in the city decided to focus their activities on tourism. At that time it was decided to restore the city as a western city.
