Twisp is a small town ( town ) in Okanogan County in the US state of Washington . At the United States Census 2000 , Twisp had 938 residents; the population decreased to 919 by the United States Census 2010 .

history

The name Twisp comes from the Okanagan , the expression / txʷəc'p / means " wasp ". It was first settled by HC Glover and parceled out as a town in 1897.

Okanogan Complex forest fire 2015

Twisp, along with several other neighboring towns in Okanogan County, was evacuated in August 2015 when the Okanogan complex got too close to the settlements. Three firefighters were killed while fighting the flames near Twisp on August 19.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city occupies a total of 3.06 square kilometers, which does not include water. Twisp lies at the confluence of the Twisp River with the Methow River .

2010 Census

As of the 2010 census , Twisp had 919 residents, 474 households and 222 families. The population density was 300.7 per km ². There were 524 housing units at an average density of 171.5 per km².

The population was 94.6% white , 0.2% African-American , 1.2% Indian , 0.5% Asian , 0.4% Pacific islander , 0.3% from other "races" and 2.7% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 3.3% of the population.

Of the 474 households, 20.3% had children under the age of 18, 31.2% were run by married couples living together , 11.4% by single mothers and 4.2% by single fathers; 53.2% were non-families. 46% of households were singles and 15.1% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 1.94 and the average family size was 2.72 people.

The median age in the city was 46.1 years. 17.5% of the population were under 18, 6.7% between 18 and 24, 24.3% between 25 and 44, 33.3% between 45 and 64 and 18.2 65 years or older. 49.6% of the population were men and 50.4% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , Twisp had 938 residents, 438 households and 258 families. The population density was 312.2 per km ². There were 505 housing units at an average density of 168.1 per km².

The population consisted of 96.16% whites , 0.96% Indians , 0.53% Asians , 0.75% of other "races" and 1.6% of two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 2.77% of the population.

Of the 438 households, 29.9% had children under the age of 18, 39.5% were run by married couples living together and 16% by single mothers; 40.9% were non-families. 34.7% of households were singles and 14.6% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size 2.7 people.

The median age in the city was 42 years. 24.2% of the population were under 18, 5.3% between 18 and 24, 26.8% between 25 and 44, 26.7% between 45 and 64 and 17.1 65 years or older. There were 86.1 men for every 100 women, and 84.2 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 26,354 and that of families was US $ 31,944. Men had a median income of US $ 26,250 versus US $ 17,857 for women. The per capita income was US $ 16,257. About 14.6% of families and 19.8% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 27.3% of those under 18 years of age and 8.2% of those over 65 years of age.
