The Finsterwalder Sängerfest is a folk festival in the southern Brandenburg town of Finsterwalde . It is based on the over 100 year old song with the refrain We are the singers from Finsterwalde and is celebrated every two years on the last weekend in August. The first Finsterwalder Singing Festival took place in 1954. It is one of the largest folk festivals in Brandenburg. The next song festival will take place in August 2021.

Emergence

The festival has its origins in the Finsterwalder singer song with the refrain We are the singers of Finsterwalde from the late 19th century by the composer Wilhelm Wolff . Today's hit was premiered on September 3, 1899 with 14 scenes in Berlin and met the local public taste. Wolff and his Hamburg singers then spread the song himself. In Finsterwalde, according to statements, it was initially said to have met with little approval. In 1901, however, the Finsterwalder men's choir wrote the slogan “We are the singers from Finsterwalde” and moved through the Spreewald as a men's singers' society . The hit made a significant contribution to the popularity of the city, which has since been called the national singer city .

Celebrations

The first Finsterwalder Song Festival took place 50 years after the song's premiere in 1954. After the political change in 1989, the old tradition was revived. After the establishment of the “Finsterwalder-Singer-Fest e. V. ”in April 1992, it has been celebrated regularly in Finsterwalder city center from Friday to Sunday evening. The Prime Minister of Brandenburg opens the festival on Friday evening with a tapping of the barrel. In 2004 the song festival was opened by the then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder . In addition to the main stage on the market square, there are other stages at the town hall, in Berliner Strasse, in 2012 on Brandenburger Strasse, in Schloßstrasse and in Finsterwalder Schloss.

During the day, choirs , big bands and popular performers create the program, in the evening bands and music groups of different styles follow . On Sunday there is a parade through the city.

On August 26, 2006, the express steam locomotive 18 201 pulled a special train from Chemnitz to the Finsterwalder Singing Festival.
