Firebug is a Firefox extension for troubleshooting, debugging and editing the Document Object Model of the opened website . Firebug was introduced in 2006 by Joe Hewitt (one of the Firefox developers) and was a style defining feature of the developer tools in web browsers, which are now available in almost all web browsers .
After most of its functionalities had been integrated into the Firefox Developer Tools built into the browser , the Firebug team announced at the end of 2016 that they would be abandoning the further development of the separate plug-in. With Firefox Quantum 57 in November 2017, the last version of Firebug became incompatible with current Firefox versions.
Details
With Firebug, CSS , HTML elements, the Document Object Model and JavaScript events of a website can be examined. The network traffic panel shows the exact times of the request and the required loading time for all elements of a website on a timeline. Firebug also has a JavaScript console that also logs Ajax actions. In addition to troubleshooting websites, Firebug is used for security tests and for performance analyzes on the web.
Firebug is free software , licensed under the BSD license . The plug-in was written by Joe Hewitt (he also worked on the Firefox development team). It has been downloaded over 82 million downloads (as of May 2016).
Expansion options
Firebug itself can load extensions (a kind of extension in an extension), which extend the capabilities for analyzing and diagnosing websites. So an extension is used for example to issue PHP - debugging , another lists performance weaknesses.
