First look agreement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A first-look arrangement is a form of right of first refusal in the film industry .

Various marketing arrangements can be made in a first-look agreement . In most cases, a film production company guarantees that it will sell finished films or films ready for production exclusively to a film distributor , video-on-demand provider or TV broadcaster . In return, the sales company guarantees certain minimum purchases. For the production company, this has the advantage of not having to sell each film individually to a distributor , but of having economic planning security. There are also first-look arrangements between screenwriters and film production companies. This usually guarantees the scriptwriters a basic salary even for those cases in which the submission is rejected ( first refusal ). Often, after the production is finished, bonus payments are distributed proportionally to the box office results .
