First Baptist Church (Whitehouse)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The First Baptist Church is a Baptist church in the Texas city of Whitehouse . The building is in the center of town north of Main Street.

history

The settlement of this area by British settlers began in the 1840s. A community developed around a whitewashed schoolhouse from the early 1850s. In September 1869, elders JA Kindle and WG Caperton organized a Baptist congregation, the New Hope Church of Christ, with about 25 founding members. Initially, the services were held once a month.

In 1887 the parish bought a piece of land on which it - nestled against a pine grove - built a small hall church. When the railroad reached Whitehouse and a central business district began to develop along the route, the church was relocated there. A new church building - a white wooden frame construction - was erected in 1901. In 1923 the church was relocated one more time and rebuilt in its current location on East Main Street. During this time it was renamed the First Baptist Church.

A new church was built in 1959. The continued growth of the congregation led to the construction of the current church in 1980.
