Toxicological data
As far as possible and customary, SI units are used. Unless otherwise noted, the data given apply to standard conditions .

Tiopronin is a drug selected from the group of the chelating agent in the treatment of heavy metal poisoning - in particular mercury , copper , iron , zinc , 210 polonium and cadmium is used -. The effect is due to the SH group in the molecule, which intercepts heavy metals via a chelate complex, which enables renal excretion. There is little clinical experience with tiopronine in acute heavy metal poisoning. Further areas of application are the treatment of radiation damage , Wilson's disease , hemosiderosis , acute and chronic hepatitis , fatty liver , liver cirrhosis , as well as the pathologically increased excretion of cystine by the kidneys ( cystinuria ) and the possible associated formation of cystine stones in the kidneys ( Nephrolithiasis ).
