The Hoverwing HW80 is the design of an eighty- seat ground-effect vehicle from 2001, which was developed as a speed ferry.

history

The Fischer Hoverwing HW80 was the first design of a large-capacity ground effect vehicle from Fischer Flugmechanik . It originated in the late nineties as an exemplary pattern design for ground effect vehicle of Hanno Fischer and Klaus Matjašič developed Hoverwing used technology. As part of the TEBEF project, the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (BMFT) made the funds available in 1997 for the construction of the Fischer Hoverwing HW2VT test vehicle . However, funding for the construction of the Hoverwing HW80 did not come about.

construction

The design of the Hoverwing HW80 consists of the catamaran hull typical of Hoverwing vehicles, which can be closed with an apron at the front and back during the take-off phase in order to be able to build up a stable air cushion when stationary and during the take-off phase. The air flow for building the air cushion is diverted from part of the propeller flow into the space between the catamaran hulls. The cabin structure on the catamaran hulls offers space for 80 passengers. As a freight version, the HW80 design can accommodate a payload of up to 10 tons. With the planned drive power of 1500 kW, the HW80 can reach a cruising speed of 180 km / h and a range of 800 km. The inverted delta wing is dimensioned in such a way that wave heights of up to 1.5 meters can be mastered in travel operations using the ground effect.

Production and sales

The cost of building the Hoverwing HW80 prototype in 2004 was estimated at around 20 million euros. The planned funding of prototype construction by the BMFT as part of a follow-up project to the HW2VT test program did not materialize. Private investors in Asia were interested in the smaller Fischer Hoverwing HW20 and Fischer Hoverwing HW50 . The start of series production of the Hoverwing HW80 by Flyship GmbH , founded in Hamburg in 2004 , did not materialize.
