The museum's cultural history collection contains around 16,800 items related to the Danish shipping and Danish offshore industry. There is also an extensive photo collection of ships and fishing. The collection of fishing equipment contains around 2,000 objects. The collections cover the period of the 19th and 20th centuries.

history

The museum opened in April 1968 and initially began focusing on Danish deep sea and coastal fishing. From the beginning there was a saltwater aquarium, which was expanded in 1976 with a tank for seals. Shipping was later also included.

In 1989, an outdoor area was built with natural-sized fishermen's huts and wooden cutters, a harbor landscape and shipyard with an active blacksmith, rescue station and many fishing equipment. The outdoor area was continuously expanded and later supplemented with a playground on the subject of fishing and shipping.

In 1994 the museum set up a research unit that has been working with the University of Southern Denmark since 2000 under the name CME (Center for Maritime and Business History).

In 2000 there was an expansion with a new permanent exhibition to around 2,000 m². The premises of the library, the stores and the offices also benefited from this expansion. In 2002 the sea water aquarium was renovated and enlarged to a water volume of around 500,000 liters. It contains a 15 m long underwater window. In 2013 and 2014, the outdoor area was supplemented by another salt water pool and a petting pool and a Wadden Sea pavilion was built.
