In all federal states, the fish health services prefer to work with fish veterinarians . With the inclusion of fish in disease law at EU level, fish health services have increasingly played a role in investigating animal diseases and in preparing for the certification of disease-free status for establishments and areas.

In the GDR, the fish health service was part of all state-owned fish farms and cooperatives and its main task was to monitor production with regular fish and water tests and to initiate appropriate measures in the event of problems.
