The fish market ( Luxembourgish : Fëschmaart ), formerly the intersection of two Roman roads, is the historic center of Luxembourg's old town . The first markets were held here on the forecourt of the Count's Castle. In the narrow streets around the fish market, formerly known as the old or cheese market, the economic and social life of the first city dwellers took place. The buildings lining the square have a special historical value.

Today, the Luxembourg National Museum of History and Art (Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art), the seat of the Council of State and the 1,000-year-old St. Michael's Church are located on the fish market . Not far away is the former Palace of Justice , the current Foreign Ministry. The fish market also had a football club, FC Amis des Sports Lëtzebuerg-Fëschmaart, which was founded in 1919 and played in the 2nd division of the Luxembourg championship.

Since April 16, 1827, the E'maischen (Emmausmarkt) has been held here every Easter Monday , a market for pottery, especially for the ceramic pipes , known as Péckvillercher . The market has been maintained by the Alstad Comité since 1937 and organized very successfully in collaboration with the city administration.
