Arson attack in 2005

An emergency call was received by the police at 11:56 pm on Saturday, September 5, 2005. An incendiary device was thrown against the asylum seekers' accommodation at Welzheimer Strasse by an unknown perpetrator. At the time of the attack, there were eleven people in the asylum seekers' accommodation, none of whom were injured. Across the street, stocks of a pottery factory were burning. Both fires went out by themselves and the fire brigade did not have to intervene. In order to find the perpetrator, the police started a large manhunt. Using a thermal imaging camera in a police helicopter, the wider area around the asylum seeker accommodation was searched. A then 17-year-old neo-Nazi was identified as the perpetrator and sentenced to several years in prison.

Fire in 2015 and reconstruction

In 2015 refugees should be accommodated in the house . On the night of August 24, 2015, the house caught fire. The fire brigade arrived shortly after 5 a.m. and had the fire under control after about an hour. Nobody got hurt.

The building should be renovated. The damage to the now quite old building amounts to several tens of thousands of euros. The demolition of the building began as early as the afternoon after the fire. According to the police, this was necessary for security reasons, and an inspection of the building, which was in acute danger of collapsing, was no longer possible.

The police first made it clear that the cause of the fire was still unclear. The police also considered an arson attack.

A few weeks after the arson attack, on October 1, 2015, the nearby Weissacher Tal education center drew attention to the incident with a one-kilometer human chain from the school to the fire ruins. The school, which has around 1300 pupils, is a member of the Europe-wide network School without Racism - School with Courage .

The municipality of Weissach im Tal wants to start a new refugee home on the site of the burned down accommodation in 2015 and thus set an example against xenophobia. A corresponding proposal of the project was u. a. presented to the municipal council by the head of the public order office, Rudolf Scharer, a few weeks after the attack.
