Kutupalong refugee camp
The Kutupalong refugee camp is the largest in the world. It is located in the Cox's Bazar district in southeastern Bangladesh on the border with Myanmar . 640,000 people live in the camp (as of March 2020). It is mainly inhabited by Rohingya who have fled Myanmar .
In November 2017, the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar signed an agreement on the return of Rohingya refugees and displaced persons from Myanmar. The United Nations Secretary-General visited the camp on July 2, 2018 with the heads of UNHCR , UNFPA, and the World Bank - who announced grants of up to $ 480 million.
The influx continued steadily over the following months of 2018, with people fleeing on foot and by boat. Many refugees arrived exhausted, traumatized and / or starved, often after days of marching. They suffer sexual violence and other human rights violations . Others have lost family members in their villages or en route.
In 2018, Spiegel reporters described their impressions as follows: “A bare landscape, full of huts stretching to the horizon ... a settlement made of plastic sheeting and bamboo poles, with no electricity or solid sewerage. And the monsoon is now sweeping over this Moloch. "
