Fontenouilles was founded on January 1, 2016 with 13 other municipalities, namely Chambeugle , Charny , Chêne-Arnoult , Chevillon , Dicy , Grandchamp , Malicorne , Marchais-Beton , Perreux , Prunoy , Saint-Denis-sur-Ouanne , Saint-Martin-sur -Ouanne , Villefranche merged to form the Commune nouvelle Charny Orée de Puisaye. The municipality of Fontenouilles belonged to the arrondissement of Auxerre and the canton of Charny .
