Fladerung

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The wavy grain , and flower called, refers to the grain of the tangential cut wood . Fladding is usually shown by the fact that the saw cut is made parallel to the trunk axis, but the annual rings taper conically towards the tip. The saw cut continuously cuts further annual rings, which then appear as parabolic curves.

Some conifers should not be used for exposed surfaces such as floors and stairs if these have been cut tangentially to the annual rings , so that there is flaking. Because then there is a risk that the annual rings will peel off over time, so that fibers and splinters stand out of the wood. For areas with particular stress, weathering or frequent exposure to moisture, boards with standing annual rings should be used, which are mainly cut radially to the trunk axis.
