The flag of Biafra was the flag of the short-lived Republic of Biafra (1967-1970), recognized by a few states , which had split off from Nigeria .

Description and meaning

The flag consisted of a horizontal tricolor , i.e. three stripes of red, black and green. The model was the Pan-African flag, which was designed in 1917 by Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA).

In the middle, black stripe of the Biafras flag was a rising sun. The eleven rays of the sun represented Biafra's eleven provinces. The rising sun was already found in the coat of arms of the Nigerian eastern province from which Biafra was formed.
