Flag of Bohuslän
The official Bohuslän flag ( Swedish Bohusläns flagga ) is a square coat of arms banner with the coat of arms of the Swedish province Bohuslän as a motif.
Blazon : On a silver background there is a red castle with a red tower and two golden gates with black hinges and locks. To the left of it is a blue sword and on the right side a blue lion with gold tinged reinforcement is leaning against the castle .
The coat of arms from 1660 corresponded to the old coat of arms of the city of Kungälv . The castle represents Bohus Fortress opposite the city. The lion with a sword probably comes from the national coat of arms of Norway , to which Bohuslän belonged until 1658.
Unofficial flag
There is also an unofficial version of the Bohuslän flag, which is based on the Scandinavian cross flags , as found predominantly in the Nordic countries .
The upper light blue and the lower dark blue background are separated from each other by a red cross. The shades of blue represent the sky and the sea. The color of the red cross symbolizes granite as a testimony to the ancient stone industry .
The flag was designed by a fishmonger from Grebbestad in the municipality of Tanum and has been in use since 1996. The criticism of this flag is that the two-tone background is irritating, it is more reminiscent of the flag of Iceland and does not follow the heraldic rule according to which "heraldic colors" should be separated from one another by a "metal" (white or yellow).
In order to demonstrate the historical ties with neighboring Norway , another design was created that is a mixture of the flag of Norway and Sweden . There is a yellow cross with a blue cross on a red background. This design corresponds to the later proposed flag of the Orkney Islands from 2007.
Unofficial flag of Bohuslän
An alternative design corresponds to the flag of the Orkney Islands .
