The current flag of ASEAN was introduced in July 1997.

It consists of ten stylized yellow rice panicles in a red circle with a white border on a blue background. The ten panicles symbolize the ten members of ASEAN.

Flags of the ASEAN countries

The colors blue, red, white and yellow are the main colors of the flags of all ASEAN countries and have the following symbolism:

  • Blue: peace and security
  • Red: courage and drive
  • White: purity
  • Yellow: wealth

The ten stalks stand for the hope of the ASEAN founders in an alliance of the ten founding states in friendship and solidarity.

The circle is supposed to symbolize the unity of the ASEAN countries.

The previous flag was similar to the current one. It had six brownish panicles, five for the founding states and one for Brunei . Asean was written under the rice panicles , the background was white instead of blue and the circle had a turquoise border and was filled with light yellow.
