Different version of the Benelux flag

The flag of the Benelux Union is the unofficial symbol commissioned by the Belgian-Dutch-Luxembourg Cooperation Committee in 1951. The flag is an overlay of the three flags of the member states Belgium , Netherlands and Luxembourg . The red stripe is borrowed from the flag of Luxembourg , the blue stripe from the flag of the Netherlands and the black stripe with the lion in the foreground is borrowed from the coat of arms of Belgium . The lion also represents the region of the Benelux countries as a whole, as all three coats of arms show a lion, the Leo Belgicus , which looks to the heraldic right .
