Fletzi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fletzi is a skeleton from the Carolingian era that was discovered in June 2013 during excavations in the old town of Wasserburg am Inn . The exact time of death could not be determined, however, indications point to the 9th century .

discovery

The skeleton and some old walls were found during excavation work before the intended construction of an apartment building on the site of the former Fletzinger brewery near Fletzingergasse. The name "Fletzi" is a mixture of the name of the brewery and an allusion to the - albeit much older - glacier mummy Ötzi .

The found walls were built very carefully and form a well, a latrine, an old city wall and probably some kind of flood protection.

Fletzi was about thirty to forty years old and with a height of about 184 centimeters was unusually tall for the time.

Fletzi was buried by resting his head on a 9th or 10th century tufa stone .

Dating

The temporal classification of the skeleton was probably based on its stratigraphic location.

The sample taken from the skeleton for the determination of the age by the radiocarbon method proved to be unusable and became known in August 2017.

Historical background

During the dead man's lifetime, Wasserburg was probably in the early control of the Counts of Ebersberg , but the first known settlement of the city dates back to the 11th century . The discovery of the skeleton and the walls proved that people lived here long before Wasserburg was first mentioned in a document, even if it is of course not yet possible to speak of real settlement life here.

Where to find the find

In August 2017 the skeleton was in the State Anthropological Collection in Munich.
