FlexWiki was free wiki software from Microsoft , most of which was developed by David Ornstein as part of the shared source initiative.

The wiki software was under the Common Public License from IBM . FlexWiki used .NET technology and had a built-in scripting language called WikiTalk. WikiTalk was based on the Smalltalk programming language , hence the name. It was a simple object-oriented programming language that allowed users to add dynamic behavior to wiki pages.

After the Windows Installer XML (WiX) and the Windows Template Library (WTL), FlexWiki was the third Microsoft project that was distributed via SourceForge . The source code was published in September 2004 .

Although many wiki systems use a database to store their pages, the development of FlexWiki began with storage based on text files. Although this reduced the administrative effort involved in maintaining a wiki presence, it made it difficult or even impossible to scale such a system . With version v1.8.01653, however, it became possible to save the content of a FlexWiki presence in an SQL server database and thus to scale a wiki up to the size of a server farm . The original text file storage is still available and is also preset.

At the beginning of 2009 the development was completely stopped and the website of the software under flexwiki.com was switched off. The software can currently still be downloaded from SourceForge .
