A centrifugal switch is an electromechanical device that switches a contact when a certain speed is reached. The speed is measured by the movement of rotating masses whose centrifugal forces work against the restoring force of a spring.

Centrifugal switches were used to trigger speed-dependent switching processes, e.g. B. Shutdown of starting capacitors on capacitor motors, speed control on the motor of the teleprinter or speed limitation on Otto engines. Since mechanical centrifugal switches are subject to wear and tear, they are now being replaced by initiators that can recognize markings on the rotating shaft with evaluation electronics.
