Floating Car Observer

Floating Car Observer is a rediscovered technology in the field of mobile traffic sensors. A special sensor is used to monitor the traffic on the opposite lane from a vehicle that is equipped with a position determination facility and a transmitter unit . From this, parameters of the traffic process can be determined, which are sent to a control center for further processing and integration into traffic management.

The method was first developed under the name Moving Observer Method by the Road Research Laboratory (Traffic and Safety Division) in Great Britain and described in an article by Wardrop and Charlesworth in 1954. It is currently used on a small scale in New Zealand. In Germany, it is currently being further developed in the VAGABUND project within the Transport Management 2010 research initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) . The Magdeburg Institute for Automation and Communication is in charge .
